NEWPORT County manager Dean Holdsworth is targeting three precious points against Kidderminster Harriers today.

The Exiles boss was delighted with Tuesday’s battling draw at table-topping Luton Town but he’s desperate for his side to record a first win of the season and double their points haul with a victory this afternoon.

Holdsworth’s men are sitting in 20th place in the early season Blue Square Bet Premier table with three points from four games after following up an opening day defeat at Darlington with draws against Tamworth, Histon and the Hatters.

Now it’s time for a win to kick-start the campaign and, with a tough trip to AFC Wimbledon on Monday, fortress Spytty Park is the place to do it according to the manager.

"I’m very positive about the way we’ve started," said Holdsworth.

"We’ve not been outplayed by anyone and we’ve only been beaten once.

"We showed at Luton that we can compete with anyone in this division but we haven’t won and it would be fantastic to get that first victory on the board."

Kidderminster, currently 16th, will be no pushovers having won at York and put Dean Saunders under increasing pressure with a 2-2 draw at Wrexham in midweek.

"There are no easy games in this division," warned Holdsworth.

"They’ve made a decent start, they score a lot of goals but they also concede a few so we’re confident.

"We’re always confident at home because we’ve got such a fantastic record at Spytty Park.

"We’ve got to come out of the traps quickly and impose ourselves and build on Tuesday night because we looked better defensively and we opened them up too."

Holdsworth is still without injured duo Wayne Turk and Lee Baker and could name an unchanged side with Eddie Odhiambo continuing at left-back and Jamie Collins back in his favoured midfield position.

"Lee and Wayne are still not ready and I don’t think there’ll be too many changes even though we’ve got two games in three days," added Holdsworth.

"We used Eddie’s pace and he did very well at left-back and it allowed Jamie to get back to what he does best.

"He was superb on Tuesday and that’s what I brought him to the club to do. He’s done a great job at left-back but he’s a top midfielder and he can be a big asset to the team there."

Steve Burr’s Harriers are boosted by the signing of Aman Verma on a one-month loan from Championship club Leicester City.

The 22-year-old utility player is set to make his debut today.

Verma, who made seven appearances on loan at Crewe last term, featured throughout pre-season for the Foxes and will add strength to Burr’s squad.

Right-back Lee Vaughan is also back in contention after serving a four-match ban picked up with AFC Telford last season, while centre-half Mark Albrighton is expected to be involved following a hamstring niggle.

Midfielder John Finnigan remains sidelined by a calf injury and has visited a specialist to get to the bottom of the long-standing problem.

Kidderminster assistant manager Gary Whild said: “Newport are new to this league and will be desperate to get their first win.

“They have a few players who were at Kidderminster last year so that always adds a bit of spice when you come up against them.”
