EUROPEAN golf is back in good heart ahead of the Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor – now less than a month away – after Miguel Angel Jimenez’ stunning victory in the European Masters on Sunday.

The quality of his golf matched the beauty of the surroundings in Switzerland, though I saw little of it unfortunately even if Galway Bay does have its appeal. And to think Jimenez is the wrong side of 40 and was playing in this tournament for the 22nd successive year!

However, my feeling that the European team is not as strong as it might be, even if the selection procedure was properly followed, was echoed by one Irish columnist at the weekend.

He says Paul Casey should have been the first name on European captain Colin Montgomerie’s wild card list, claiming it defied logic that despite Edoardo Molinari’s win at Gleneagles his 35th world ranking position excluded Casey from the team.

He further suggested it beggared belief that two out of Casey, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington were left out and says that with six rookies in the team it now looks much weaker than could have been imagined a few months ago. We shall see!
