NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have announced a key appointment in their backroom staff who could exercise a considerable influence on their future direction.

John Reid, a former Newport, Cross Keys, Ebbw Vale and Crawshays scrum half, has just taken over as the region’s commercial manager, joining Rodney Parade Limited.

It is a vital role because his brief will include maximising revenue from the hospitality suites which will be part of the new stand on the Corporation Road side of the ground, as well as bringing in new sponsorship, while he is also committed to bringing in stadium entertainment. Work is due to start on the construction early in the new year, and it is vital extra revenue is raised from that as well as drawing in extra financial support from industry and commerce in the area.

Dragons chairman Martyn Hazell has long been the main financial backer of the Dragons, certainly since the departure of hugely popular former benefactor Tony Brown, who does still retain an interest and is helping fund the new stand, in addition to his company Bisley’s name featuring on the back of the team’s jerseys.

Reid is from the region and he made 18 appearances for Newport between 1989-91 while also playing for the other Gwent teams.

“Coming from the region I know the Dragons and Newport well and am keen to build on the success and development the region has seen both on and off the field in recent times,” said Reid.

“I’m looking to take on the challenge of implementing new strategies at Rodney Parade that will take this great club to an even higher level in stadium entertainment.”

He has a wealth of sales experience over 14 years and has held positions with Bristol Rugby Club and Hampshire County Cricket Club.

He has also had extensive corporate experience with Newbridge Networks, Alcatel and Emhart Teknologies.
