Newport County boss Peter Beadle is urging his side to be more ruthless ahead of Wednesday's home showdown with Basingstoke Town (kick-off 7-45pm).

Beadle was content with Saturday's hard-fought 3-3 Conference South away draw with Fisher Athletic, but believes his side are set to claimthree points at Spytty Park in the opening home game.

He explained: "Saturday was a useful performance and I am not going to explain otherwise. We were the better side in a lot of ways and I wasvery pleased with the passion and determination we showed.

"At the end of the day we could have taken all three points, but in order to do so, we need to develop a more ruthless streak and I am sure this will come for us.

"We attacked well at Fisher and I am proud of that, but you need to be more street-wise against this kind of opposition and they found the time and space to open us up.

"We need to maintain our level of performance and certainly show the same level of commitment against Basingstoke and against Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday. Basingstoke have a new manager and they are not coming here to help us on our way, that is for sure, they will be ready for a battle."

Beadle believes his side did enough to claim the win at Fisher, but the professional outfit came back each time County took the advantage and Beadle is happy to accept the way the host side hung onto the game.

He added: "We scored three times on Saturday and that in itself is a bonus, on the first day you expect things to be tight and we forced the issue andcreated chances. But we were never in a position to make the game safe and that is a problem, we need to be more ruthless.

"Basingstoke are a good side and we certainly won't be treating them lightly, we hope we can get off to a great start at home, because our form a home could be crucial this season. It is pleasing that we have started the season looking like we are full of goals, but we need to be much tighter in defence and to build on a decent opening to the season."
