NEWPORT County boss Peter Beadle believes his side are on the right track and is urging supporters to come and see for themselves, starting with tomorrow's home clash against Basingstoke Town (kick-off 7.45pm).

Beadle witnessed his charges draw 3-3 at Fisher on Saturday in the season opener in a fantastic contest and is confident they can build on that with three points tomorrow.

It is the first of a double-header of home games this week with Havant and Waterlooville the visitors on Saturday and Beadle is hoping two good performances will convince fans to turn out regularly this season.

He explained: "I would like to think we will have the highest average attendance of any team in the Conference South this season, but we will only do that if we can convince the fans there is a reason to come.

"The support on Saturday at Fisher was excellent and hopefully word will have spread that we played well against a good team.

"You can't put a price on how important a large support is, it would be wonderful if we could average over 1,000 people this season, but we need to keep performing well."

Beadle is boosted by the fact that he has a fully fit squad to choose from, skipper John Brough has shaken off an ankle knock and Stewart Edwards - who missed the trip to Fisher because of a lack of match fitness following injury - is in contention to feature.

County beat a woeful Basingstoke at the back end of last season in a make- or-break contest at the bottom of the Conference South, but Beadle is expecting a much tougher test tomorrow.

"Basingstoke will be a different proposition this season. They are a strong side, well managed and pose a big physical threat," he said.

"We will match them for effort and commitment, that is one thing I have never had reason to question with my side, but we need to cut out the defensive lapses that cost us the win on Saturday."

Beadle will once again watch the game from the dugout, but assistant boss Scott Young will be in the stand as he is serving a six-match touchline ban for an incident when he was with Ton Pentre.

"It gives us a bird's eye perspective and that can be useful, having myself or Scott looking on from the stand is beneficial and I think we will carry on doing it even when Scott isn't banned," he said.

"Mind you, based on last season, I will probably spend a bit of time in the stand this season!"
