NEVER in a million years did I expect to be writing about the Newport Gwent Dragons for a second time in a week, not least with the free-falling Exiles and moronic Sky TV presenters to examine.

Yet, despite myself, despite the inevitable abuse that will follow, it’s impossible not to look at Paul Turner and ask a very simple question – what the hell is wrong with you?

I could scarcely believe my eyes when I read about his press conference bust-up in the wake of a defeat so embarrassing that my fellow columnist Robin Davey felt compelled to write how poor they had been.

For those of you who missed it, Turner threatened to fight a reporter for having the temerity to question whether he intended to see out his contract, the Dragons having won just six times all season.

“Go on, get out before I hit you out,” Turner told the reporter.

“Threatening me are you?” the reporter questioned.

Turner: “Do you want me to sort it out?”

Honestly, it’s difficult to know where to start.

As a point of order, it’s truly pathetic when management of football or rugby clubs pick and choose which media men they will or won’t deal with.

It makes the person in question look small and fragile, unwilling to fulfil the media obligations that are part and parcel of doing the job.

Dave Jones at Cardiff City is a prime example. Banning Media Wales journalists from City press conferences is a completely pointless exercise.

They still get the quotes, they just can’t ask questions which their readers want answering. In short, only the punters suffer, the journalists get by just fine.

As pathetic as it is though, at least banning a journalist saves the embarrassment of so publicly losing your rag.

One is reminded of the Joe Kinnear rant at Newcastle in 2008, though even he stopped short of offering a reporter out for a fight.

Just imagine the headlines if ANY Premier League football manager threatened to strike a journalist in a press conference? It’d be a Youtube sensation within minutes and would quite possibly make the position of the manager untenable.

Turner will have no such problems and he’s going nowhere.

But in terms of the situation at the Dragons, Turner’s histrionics have only compounded a bad season, only emphasised that he is rattled about the poor form.

Because from listening to Turner on numerous occasions he’s always come across as cool and intelligent, calm and composed.

If that veneer has slipped from the coach, what can we expect from the players?

It’s just thoroughly embarrassing behaviour and shame on the Dragons for allowing the media man to be kicked out of the press conference and accepting that it’s quite ok for their coach to have a massive tantrum if he so chooses.

Foot in mouth syndrome does appear to be catching though and it’s farewell to Andy Gray and now Richard Keys too after the Sky sexism storm.

Again, this is pretty clear in my mind at least, the duo have been caught absolutely bang to rights and deserve everything they get.

We can’t condemn Big Ron Atkinson for making off-microphone racist remarks or Rodney Marsh for ill-advised tsunami ‘jokes’ and call for them to be sacked and then treat sexism any differently.

The pair look even more stupid because the woman in question, referee’s assistant Sian Massey, ended up making a great call with a marginal offside in the game between Wolves and Liverpool.

We then saw in the fallout that Gray made sexually explicit comments to a female colleague and Keys believes it to be acceptable to refer to women as ‘it’ and that it’s acceptable to describe ‘smashing it.’ It’s not even playground stuff, it is pathetic posturing and Sky should be applauded for acting so decisively.

Five years ago I would personally have been loathe to lose Gray as a viewer of the product, but in recent times he’s become less and less palatable, the viewing public not likely to miss his catchphrase commentary very much at all.

Keys has always come across as pompous in the extreme and I personally found his comments to be particularly sinister in their tone (as did Graeme Souness who kicks Keys in the second clip).

With the excellent Jeff Stelling in their ranks, Sky won’t struggle too badly without either of them and in this instance justice has been served.

Jamie Redknapp or Souness are both qualified to step up and take over from Gray and I for one would encourage that. Whoever does get the post, congratulations. Indeed, “take a bow, son.”

And finally…reading the Newport County messageboard at the moment is like reading a flurry of obituaries for someone who hasn’t actually died yet, reports of the Exiles’ expiry premature end greatly exaggerated.

I don’t know if anyone has seen the Blue Square Bet Premier League table, because from what I am reading I can only presume County are rock bottom of the league without a win all season?

What’s that? They are sixth? Just outside the play-offs despite not winning a game in 2011?

That’s far from a position of despair and I can’t understand where all this doom and gloom is coming from.

Of course the club miss Dean Holdsworth and wish he had stayed, but as I wrote two weeks ago, we all simply have to move on.

County have. They’ve replaced their ‘A’ licensed coach with two other ‘A’ licensed coaches (James Rowberry and Kevin Cooper) they’ve drafted in John Hartson to work with the strikers at the club and are continuing to try to strengthen the playing squad.

When Holdsworth left, the greatest fear would’ve been a massive player cull. As things stand, only Jamie Collins might be departing, the impact of losing Deano has been minimised as well as it possibly could.

When Deano was here, you’d have been confident that new signings would arrive and that they’d be up to scratch. And who used to sign those players? The same man who does now, Tim Harris.

If things continue to go badly for County, we’ll be the first ones to question Tim, the board, the decision not to appoint a manager now and the fact that Spytty the Dog now comes with accessories every week (he’s like Barbie).

However, we’ve not got to that point yet, there should be faith in them to arrest the slide, they’ve earned that faith over 18 glorious months.

County have 54 points to play for and are three points outside of the top five. Crisis? Yeah, do me a favour love.
