NEWPORT County are hopeful of adding two new faces to their squad in time for tomorrow’s visit to basement boys Histon, having already captured a new left back.

The Exiles have been in horrendous form in 2011, picking up just a point and matters haven’t been helped by the departure of boss Dean Holdsworth, who has moved to League Two Aldershot Town.

That has left director of football Tim Harris in charge in a caretaker capacity and he’s been working around the clock this week in looking to strengthen the squad which is still just three points outside the Conference playoff positions.

A key priority has been identifying a left back to deputise for broken leg victim Lee Baker and, after much deliberation, the Exiles have finally landed their man, Michael Burns inking a deal until the end of the season.

Burns, 22, is a graduate of the famous Liverpool academy, twice an FA Youth Cup winner with the Anfield outfit in 2006 and 2007.

Burns subsequently joined Bolton Wanderers when Sammy Lee moved to the Reebok as manager, but didn’t make the grade in the Premier League.

Burns enjoyed a brief spell with Carlisle United in League One in 2009, making his professional debut against Walsall, but injury hit his hopes of securing a long-term deal.

This term he has been playing with Runcorn and after impressing for the Exiles in a trial match with Bristol Rovers, boss Harris is confident he’s landed a player with much to give – and prove.

“Michael is hungry for a chance, he’s a very tidy and composed player and you can tell the class he has, he’s got a great touch and good mobility,” he explained.

“Left back has obviously been a real priority area for us and we’re delighted to have landed him.”

However, the hope is that Huyton-born Burns won’t be the only new addition, an as yet unnamed midfielder also closing in on a deal at Spytty Park.

The 20-year old is a former Championship academy graduate and also spent a time in Scotland playing for Glasgow Rangers.

“Hopefully, we’ll force that one through in time, but we’ve had some issues with the international clearance,” Harris said of a player he considers good enough to be playing several levels higher.”

Meanwhile, Harris confirmed the Argus exclusive about John Hartson becoming a part time coach, the former Wales number 9 taking his first session with the strikers yesterday.

“John had a big smile on his face and so did the boys he was working with, he gave the whole place a lift,” Harris commented.

“In terms of actual management experience John is limited and this is an absolutely ideal opportunity for us both that allows John to keep doing the media work he’s contracted to do.”
