BEDWAS are looking for ex-Newbridge pair Richard Powell and Tom Watkins to take the step up to Premiership in their stride after signing up at Bridge Field.

Fly-half Powell and wing Watkins were key figures when ’Bridge were pipped to the Division One East title by Ebbw Vale last season.

The pair both played for Newport on permit at the end of the campaign and now they will get the chance to test their mettle in the top flight on a permanent basis.

“They are both very good Division One players and hopefully they can make the step up,” said Bedwas head coach Steve Law.

“The standard is not always great in Division One but nearly every side has a player or two that really stand out.

“These boys have been given their chance and are looking good in training so far, so hopefully they can go on to make their mark for us.”

Bedwas have strengthened their back row with the signings of Simon Grainger (Cardiff), Gareth Williams (Merthyr) and Lee Purnell (Tonmawr).

Centres Darren Ryan (Cardiff) and Rhys Howells (Glamorgan Wanderers) will attempt to fill the gap in midfield left by the departure of Tom Cooper to the Cornish Pirates.

Wing Nathan Rees (Cardiff) has also signed up while the Bridge Field outfit are casting an eye over Cardiff University lock Josh Porter.

“I think we will be competitive again,” said Law. “You have got to increase your expectations and improve the standard of your players every year in this league and I think we have done that.”

- Cross Keys have appointed scrum-half Owen Jones as their vice-captain. Openside Rob Nash continues as skipper.
