NEWPORT Drillerman Hornets travel to face Scunthorpe Saints tonight hoping two new signings will bring a first away National League win of the 2011 speedway campaign.

In come former Oxford, Weymouth, Isle of Wight, Somerset and Dudley ace Brendan Johnson plus Steven Jones, who has appeared for Newcastle, Redcar and Carmarthen.

Out of the side is the injured David Gough and Tom Young, who the club report has been rested.

“David Gough sustained facial injuries in a recent fixture and with new averages in force, the opportunity to strengthen became available,” said Newport general manager Laurence Rogers.

“The club looked at the situation and after a lot of deliberation and soul searching, have brought Steven Jones in.

“Also signed is Brendan Johnson, who scored an impressive paid 11 for Dudley against the Hornets in their last match, and Tom Young is being rested.”

Co-promoter Nick Mallet commented on the Young matter: “It was one of the hardest decisions the club has had to make.

“But I stress Tom remains very much part of the club’s plans and hopefully he’ll be back in Newport colours sooner rather than later.”
