NEWPORT Wasps team boss Kevin Brown believes Thursday’s magnificent 48-42 win at Ipswich Witches is little more than club history and should now be consigned to the memory bank.

While extremely delighted that his side start tonight's British Premier League Knockout Cup quarter-final, second leg tie six points to the good, Brown insists his side must simply not bask in the glory.

“That was our best away display by far since I was appointed when the club re-formed in 2009," said Brown.

“But if we don't reproduce it against opponents who will be chomping at the bit for revenge, then it will count for nothing.

“We were the underdogs at Ipswich and we were comfortable with that status. Now the roles are reversed and it's how we handle this different type of pressure that will dictate if we are to progress to the semi-finals.

“Ipswich will not come here feeling sorry for themselves. They'll arrive extremely positive and we must match them from the very off.

“We have now a chance to turn our season around and give our wonderful fans something to cheer at last.

“They have been very patient with us and we are all very much aware of what having a successful side means to them.

“The ball is in our court and I am confident we have enough experience to deal with whatever is thrown at us.”

The Wasps will be led by Ipswich-born skipper Leigh Lanham, who top scored with 13 points from five rides on Thursday at his hometown track.

Everyone chipped in with valuable points and there was another assured performance from ever-improving reserve Todd Kurtz.

The popular Australian is fast developing into the sort of rider Newport’s management had hoped he would be when they brought him to Wales at the start of last season.

His reserve partner and fellow Aussie Mark Jones has struggled in comparison, although there are signs that he, too, is beginning to come to terms with British speedway.

Ipswich will be headed by another Australian in the shape of Newport track expert Kevin Doolan, a multi winner of individual titles at Queensway Meadows over the years.

Newport co-promoter Steve Malllet is hoping for a large turnout to watch Wasps bid to reach the last four: "We would love all sports fans, not just speedway followers, to come and shout us on to victory," he said.

The winners will meet either Sheffield Tigers or Workington Comets, who meet tonight in Cumbria with the Yorkshire club starting 50-40 ahead.
