WASPS 56 SCUNTHORPE 39

AUSTRALIAN ace Jason Doyle posted a brilliant 15-point paid maxiumum as Newport Mike Manning Audio Wasps secured a magnificent quick-fire revenge British Premier League win on Saturday night.

The Wasps had slipped to a 46-44 defeat in Lincolnshire the previous evening when Swedish star Robin Aspegren picked up a wrist injury.

But the Wasps covered for his absence in fine style by posting their 10th successive home league victory.

Aspegren now faces a race against time to be fit for the weekend’s two-legged BP Knockout Cup final against league champions-elect Glasgow Tigers.

The Wasps had no fewer than four of their six competing riders posting double-figure scores, and with reserves Mark Jones and Todd Kurtz also doing reasonably well, this was a one-sided victory, as the scoreline suggests.

The Wasps have made Queensway Meadows Stadium a fortress since starting that home-win sequence back in early July, and if they can manage to get Aspegren fit for the cup final, then there’s no reason whey they can’t lift silverware for the first time since the club’s 1999 Premier Trophy success over Edinburgh Monarchs.

Newport Mike Manning Audio Wasps 56: 1 – Charlie Gjedde 11+1(4); 2 – Anders Mellgren 10+2(5); 3 – Rider replacement for Robin Aspegren; 4 – Jason Doyle 14+1(5); 5 – Leigh Lanham 11(6); 6 – Mark Jones 4(5); 7 – Todd Kurtz 6(5).

Scunthorpe Scorpions 39: 1 – Rider replacement for David Howe; 2 – Ben Wilson 9(6); 3 – Thomas Jørgensen 0(3); 4 – Richard Hall 8(5); 5 – Carl Wilkinson 1+1(4); 6 – Michael Palm Toft 14+2(7); 7 – Steve Worrall 7+1(5).

Newport Drillerman Hornets slipped to a 41-30 defeat in the National League at champions-elect Stoke Potters in a meeting curtailed because of a time-curfew at their Loomer Road ground.

Stoke Potters 41: 1– Kyle Howarth (guest) 0(2); 2 – James Pickard 8(4); 3 – James Sarjeant 10+1(4); 4 – Tony Atkin 5+1(3); 5 – Tim Webster 8(3); 6 – Tim Nobes 2+1(3); 7 Gareth Isherwood 8+1(5).

Newport Drillerman Hornets 30: 1 – Jay Herne (capt) 8(3); 2 – Tom Young 2(3); 3 – Brendan Johnson 9(4); 4 – Matt Bates 0(1); 5 – James White-Williams 3(3); 6 – Lloyd Barrett 1+1(4); 7 – Richard Andrews 7+1(4).

- The first leg of Newport Mike Manning Audio Wasps’ home Knockout Cup final clash with Glasgow Tigers at Queensway Meadows Stadium next Saturday will start at 7pm.

The next-day second leg in Scotland will begin at 4pm.

- Wasps pair Charlie Gjedde and Jason Doyle failed to land the British Premier League Riders' Championship at Sheffield last night.

Gjedde withdrew because of injury but Doyle's 10-point total from five outings put him into the semi finals.

However he finished fourth and last with Somerset Rebels' Sam Masters going onto lift the title.
