ENGLAND ended some stern resistance from the Australian tailenders to dismiss their hosts for 268 on day one of the third Ashes Test at Perth.

Graeme Swann got the final wicket of Ben Hilfenhaus caught by Alastair Cook at short-leg for 13 but it was Peter Siddle, unbeaten on 35, and the returning Mitchell Johnson with a battling 62 who really frustrated England after tea.

Australia, already 1-0 down in the series, recovered from 69-5 earlier in the day to add a further 199 runs for their final five wickets with Mike Hussey (61) and Brad Haddin (53) continuing their fine form with the bat.

Chris Tremlett, in for the injured Stuart Broad, and Jimmy Anderson took three wickets apiece for England while Steve Finn and Swann took two each.
