CWMBRAN’S Theo Wharton has ended his six-year stint as a professional at Cardiff City after sealing a move to York City.

The 22-year-old St Kitts & Nevis international has signed a one-year contract with National League North side York, where he will team up with former Newport County AFC striker Jon Parkin.

Bluebirds academy graduate Wharton, the son of former Cwmbran Town player and manager Sean and godson of ex-Wales international Nathan Blake, played for Cardiff in the FA Cup as a teenager in 2012 and 2013.

Then manager Malky Mackay predicted a “big first-team future” for Wharton, who represented Wales at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level before switching allegiance to the birthplace of his grandparents last year.

But he failed to make a single first-team appearance in the league and heads for Bootham Crescent after spending the latter part of last season on loan at Weston-super-Mare.

"I'm really pleased to be here," Wharton told York's YouTube channel.

"I spoke to the gaffer [Gary Mills] a few times and I was really enthusiastic to come and be part of this set-up.

"I'm looking forward to it. It's a new challenge but I think we've got a strong team. I think we will be fine and obviously we're looking to get promoted.

"I'm a box-to-box midfielder and don't mind defending," he continued.

"I like to get forward as well and try score a few goals.

"The league is a lot better than it used to be; there's a lot of competition, so it's not going to be a walk in the park. So we've got to do our best and perform every week."

The Minstermen suffered relegation to the National League North last season with Parkin and fellow former Exiles Danny Holmes and Yan Klukowski part of the team.

All three started as Mills’ team won the FA Trophy at Wembley in May but Klukowski has recently moved on to Torquay United in the National League, while Holmes is a free agent after rejecting a new deal with York last month.
