DAN Butler insists Newport County AFC’s players won’t be distracted by their FA Cup replay against Tottenham Hotspur at Colchester United today.

The Exiles will tread the hallowed Wembley turf for the third time this decade when they tackle Premier League giants Spurs again next Wednesday.

But before that there are crucial League Two points up for grabs this afternoon, as Colchester Community Stadium hosts a clash between two teams fighting for promotion.

And left-back Butler is confident the visitors will be fully focused on John McGreal’s U’s rather than the midweek trip to Wembley.

“We need to stick to our game plan, which we do 95 per cent of the time, and I’m confident we can go there and get three points,” he told iFollow Exiles.

“We’ve proven already that we won’t become distracted by a big game.

“We weren’t fazed in the build-up to the first Tottenham game, and our form was very good in the league and we beat Leeds.

“Then we went on to win a couple more games after that so [Tuesday against Lincoln] was our first loss in nine, and I don’t think the Tottenham game will faze anyone.”

That 3-1 defeat by the Imps on Tuesday night had an air of expectation about it given the effort put in during the 1-1 draw with Spurs a few days earlier.

“It’s one game and we’re not going to suddenly start saying that our season is over because we’ve lost one game,” he added.

“We’ve done really well over the past month so it’s just about going to Colchester and I’m confident we can get the three points.

“I think we will put it right against Colchester. We’ve done that all season [put things right after a defeat] so I’m confident that we can do it again.

“We know that it’s going to be a battle and we know that we will have to work hard.”

The U’s are three points behind County in 11th place.
