MICHAEL Flynn says the achievement of taking Newport County AFC to Wembley in the FA Cup will mean nothing if the rest of the season turns out to be a “damp squib” for his side.

County slipped to 12th in the League Two table after Saturday’s home clash with Forest Green Rovers was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Rodney Parade.

The Exiles have lost their last two league fixtures and are now six points below the play-off places with 15 games left to play, starting at sixth-placed Mansfield Town tonight.

And, after being frustrated by the weather at the weekend, Flynn is desperate to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

“It’s lovely that you’re reading nice things about yourself, but if it turns into a damp squib then that will mean nothing,” he said of the reaction to last week’s FA Cup replay defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

“I want to keep enhancing my reputation and that of the staff and players by going on a run and getting as many points as we can.

“It has been a fantastic start and I just want to keep improving, day in and day out.

“I’m not one to think ‘this is going well now, let’s sit back and enjoy the ride’. I want to keep improving.”

Flynn’s final match as a player was in a 2-1 defeat at Mansfield last February (above) and he knows his side can’t afford a repeat of that result tonight.

“That was my final game and looking back it’s hard to believe where we are now 12 months on,” he said.

“We’ve made improvements everywhere and we’re in a very good position.

“It’s a little mini-season now and we want to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

“Some of the results went for us at the weekend and some went against us but it’s hard to predict results at the moment.

“Everyone will take points off each other and we know from the end of last season that we can put a string of results together.

“We’ve got to go and do that again and if we can we will be right in the mix for the play-offs.”

Defenders Ben White and David Pipe are fit to play at Field Mill after being withdrawn as a precaution at Wembley but striker Paul Hayes is likely to be ruled out with a sore groin.

“Everyone apart from Hayesy is fit,” said the manager. “They’ve all trained and they all look fresh.

“I would have made changes on Saturday but they’ve all had a little rest now so it makes my selection more difficult.

“There’s good competition in the squad now and everyone knows they have to perform if they want to keep the shirt.

“I didn’t pick the team [on Saturday] because I was waiting to see whether the game would be on or off but there would have been a few changes, that’s for sure.

“We’ll have a look at it and try to pick a team to go and win a tough game at Mansfield.”
