NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn’s joy at beating Plymouth Argyle was tempered by what looks like a bad injury to Mickey Demetriou.
The centre-back was stretchered off after just 21 minutes with a suspected fracture in his leg.
But his replacement Kyle Howkins headed in the only goal of the game nine minutes from time to earn County a first win of the season in League Two.
“The second-half performance was very good,” said Flynn afterwards.
“In the first half they dominated possession and looked more dangerous than us.
“I had to make three enforced changes with Mickey and Benno [Scot Bennett] going off and Matty Dolan pulling up in training yesterday, so it’s a credit to the lads who came in.
“It was a great header from Kyle. We challenged him because he should be scoring a lot more but he put in a real powerful and dominant header.
“It looks like Mickey has broken one of the bones in his leg,” added the Exiles boss.
“He’s gone to hospital for a scan. I hope he’s OK but it’s not looking good. He’s a big player for us and I just hope he’s not in too much pain. Fingers crossed it’s not as bad as we fear.”
County are up to ninth in the embryonic table on five points, one behind Plymouth as they drop from first to fifth.
“We wanted to have a good start but the league table doesn’t form properly until after about 10 or 12 games,” said Flynn.
“I think we’ve done that and we could have won all three games.
“Other than Mickey’s injury it’s been a perfect day. It’s my little boy Samuel’s second birthday, Wales won in the rugby and we got three points.”
Buzzing the boys got the win today!! Thank you for all the messages!! Means a lot!! Set backs are here to test us and don’t worry I’ll be back stronger than ever 💛🖤💛🖤 pic.twitter.com/U0BrkiQYdm
