NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn saw his side earn a first win of the season and set a new club-record 13-game unbeaten run in regular league fixtures, but he’s not letting anyone get carried away.

Substitute Kyle Howkins headed home the winner nine minutes from the end to end Plymouth Argyle’s 100 per cent start to the season and knock them off the top of the League Two table.

A first three-point haul of the campaign, after draws against Mansfield Town and Cambridge United, moves County up to ninth but Flynn is not interested in the league table at this stage.

“I don’t take any notice of it,” said the Exiles boss. “It doesn’t form properly until 10 or 12 games so we’ll have a look where we are then.

“We wanted to have a good start and I think we’ve done that – we could easily have won all three.

“It’s been a really tough start but we’re unbeaten and we haven’t lost a regular game since March 12 so that’s a fantastic effort from the players.

“We must be doing something right and it goes to show how far we’ve come. We’re going from strength to strength at the minute.

“But, even though it’s a good start, nobody’s getting carried away and I won’t let them get carried away.”

South Wales Argus:

The only disappointment for Flynn was a potentially serious injury to Mickey Demetriou, who was stretchered off after just 21 minutes and replaced by Howkins.

“It doesn’t look good, if I’m honest,” he said. “It looks like he’s broken one of the bones in his leg.

“He’s gone for a scan and I’m hoping it’s not as bad as we think, but it’s not looking good.

“He’s a big player for us and I just hope he’s not in too much pain and fingers crossed it’s not as bad as we fear.

“It has taken a little bit of the shine off it,” he added.

I’m gutted for Mickey because he’s a great lad and he’s a big player for us.

“Other than that it would have been a perfect day.”

Depending on the severity of Demetriou’s injury, Flynn may look to bring in another defender before the September 2 deadline.

But, for now, Howkins has a chance to stake his claim and he’s set to start at Walsall on Tuesday.

“I’ll have to have a look at things,” said Flynn.

“But we’ve got another game on Tuesday and our focus will be on that and then we’ll see what we can do.

“I thought it was a great header from Kyle and when you’re 6ft 5ins you should be doing that.

“It’s down to him now to keep his place.”

Midfielders Scot Bennett [quad], who was withdrawn at half-time on Saturday, and Matty Dolan [hamstring] are doubtful for the trip to Bescot Stadium.

But striker Tristan Abrahams, who impressed off the bench against Argyle, could start.

“Benno was injured and Matty Dolan pulled up in training on Friday,” said Flynn.

“I thought Tristan was excellent. He’s a big strong boy, he’s direct and he didn’t stop running. He was a thorn in their side.

“He’s 100 per cent pushing for a start now.”
