A TORFAEN woman has became Wales' youngest female golf captain.

Danielle Cobley is the ladies captain at Pontnewydd Golf Club, at the age of 24.

She had her ‘drive off’ initiation on Wednesday.

Miss Cobley, from Croesyceiliog, said: “The atmosphere here is just great and I know there is a lot of work to be done but being ladies captain is an opportunity I couldn’t afford to not take up.

“I’m looking forward to helping the club as much as I can as we look to attract new members. With the planned course extension, it’s an exciting time to be captain.”

Miss Cobley has been very successful since taking up the game as a nine year-old with her dad.

She became county champion in 2010 and has won the club championship for the last eight years.

She also holds the course record at Pontnewydd.

“The men’s captain gets a green jacket whereas I just have a badge, but I’m wearing it with pride,” she said.

The Golf Union of Wales confirmed having no record of a younger ladies captain.

Outgoing captain Vivien Evans, 66, said: “It’s wonderful that Danielle is taking the captaincy, and the level she plays at is unbelievable, being by far the best player we have got.

“It’s nice to think that someone so young can take on so much responsibility. Its an exciting time for golf”
