SHARP-shooting netballers from Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls have become champions of Wales for the first time in their school’s history.

The team emerged victorious at the annual Presidents Cup tournament.

It was the fourth year HMSG had qualified to represent South East Wales in the round robin competition.

Coach Caroline Jones said: “The first match against Crickhowell High School saw an 18-3 victory and this was quickly backed up by a 13-0 win over Brynteg.

“An exceptionally tough match against Cardiff High School saw the score at 3-7 at half time, but a quick change of pace and some superb shooting turned the game around and HMSG ran out 12-11 winners.

“Reigning champions Neath Port Talbot College were next on the agenda, but with superb play through the centre court, HMSG won 16-8.”

With just three more games to play, HMSG had to secure the wins to ensure overall victory and a 19-3 win over Elian was quickly followed by a clear win over Pembroke College.

Coach Jones added: “With one game left to play, HMSG were the only unbeaten team. Castell Alun fought tremendously hard to prevent HMSG from taking the title, but a goal in the last seconds meant our girls claimed the title for the very first time in the school's history.

“Huge congratulations to captain Evie, Sereima, Issie, Ellie, Poppy, Annabel, Victoria, Jess, Izzy and Kala on a tremendous performance in an extremely tough competition.”
