The EFL fixtures were announced on Thursday morning, giving fans plenty to look forward to when the 2018-19 season starts in August.
Previous years have thrown up some memorable openers and Press Association Sport’s Sam Constance looks at five of them here.
Middlesbrough 9 Brighton 0 (August 23, 1958)
Brian Clough starred in this Division Two goalfest at Ayresome Park. Then 23, Clough scored five goals in a one-sided contest. Bill Harris added two penalties and Alan Peacock netted a brace in what remains the Teesside club’s record league victory.
Barnet 4 Crewe 7 (August 17, 1991)
Barnet went down heavily in their first match in Division Four – having scored 103 goals in winning the Conference to take their place among the 92. Their next two games under Barry Fry ended 5-5 and 6-3 and they went on to finish seventh, one place and one point behind Crewe. Goals were in the air on this day – Exeter also lost 6-3 at West Brom in Division Three.
Luton 8 Yeovil 2 (August 5, 2017)
League Two Luton began their promotion-winning campaign with a thumping victory over Yeovil, who led early on thanks to an Otis Khan free-kick. Striker James Collins led the way with a debut hat-trick and Isaac Vassell (2), Oliver Lee, Elliot Lee and Alan McCormack were also on target. Francois Zoko got Yeovi’s second goal midway through the second half – when they trailed 7-1.
MK Dons 4 Gillingham 2 (August 9, 2014)
Gillingham led this League One contest 2-0 thanks to efforts inside the first half hour from Cody McDonald and Danny Kedwell (penalty) – but an own goal from Kourtney Hause just before half-time sparked a turnaround. Will Grigg and Kyle McFadzean had the hosts ahead midway through the second half and Leon Legge’s 73rd minute own goal capped a burst of three goals in five minutes which ended the Gills’ challenge.
Stevenage 3 Oldham 4 (August 6, 2013)
Four second-half goals enabled the Latics to come from behind and start the 2013-14 season with a win in League One. Darius Charles had the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time but current England international James Tarkowski levelled. The visitors scored three of the five goals netted in the final quarter to take the points. Jose Baxter scored twice, one a penalty, and Christian Montano got the others for Oldham, with Greg Tansey and Filipe Morais replying for the hosts.
