Mark Williams couldn’t wait to beat his son on the golf course after his scathing judgement kept the world No.3’s dream of a fourth World Snooker Championship title alive and kicking.

The Cwm potter edged past world No.14 Stuart Bingham 13-11 in a scrappy round two affair and it was far from straightforward for Williams, who need a gutsy final frame break of 75 to finally get over the line.

Williams and Bingham were level at eight frames apiece overnight and after a stern word from son Kian revitalised the Welshman on the tables, Williams was desperate to enact his revenge on the fairways.

“He didn’t say I was playing crap, he said I am crap!” the 45-year-old laughed.

“He just said ‘how are you so crap these days, Dad?’ but what can you do, only laugh? I did get back to the hotel and give him a couple of punches!

“He’s quite dry and likes taking the mickey - I don’t know where he gets it from! I wasn’t expecting it, that’s for sure, but I just went in there and he said ‘why are you so crap now, Dad?’

“What can I do, I know I played bad and I’ve just got to laugh, haven’t I? I’ll take him on the golf course this afternoon and I’m going to smash him!

“He doesn’t play much snooker himself - he tries to have a couple of shots in the practice room with me but he’s useless!

“I’m going to try and get to tee time at Rotherham, take my boy there and give him an absolute bollocking because of all the stick he’s been giving me over the last few days!

“I’m going to be winding him up now when I’m knocking in birdie puts - he’s going to be sulking!”

Breaks of 97, 90 and 55 in the first session proved insufficient in satisfying Kian but Williams came out on Friday a changed man, as visits of 90, 74 and 67 laid the foundations for victory.

Bingham, world champion in 2015, fought admirably but a brave 75 from the 22-time ranking event winner dashed his advances and booked Williams a place in the quarter-finals.

There he will face either Ding Junhui or Ronnie O’Sullivan, with the latter already boasting five World Championship titles in his career.

Four is the magic number for Williams and after a 14-year gap between his second and third world title, he has a golden opportunity to draw level with the great John Higgins.

Williams gave a memorable naked press conference after vowing to do so if he won in 2018 but two years on from that triumph, was far less willing to make such a promise.

“Nothing’s lined up - you couldn’t bear to see me naked again!” he added.

“Once, and that was it - I’m not going to say nothing stupid, because whatever I say, if the unthinkable happened I’d have to do it, so I’m keeping my mouth shut!”
