Welcome to Newport’s first Rugby themed café, The Scrum-tious Café.

It is the brainchild of Nick Portman, who is the is the landlord of The Baneswell Social Club on Stow Hill. It’s due his success of running the Social Club as a popular sports pub, that led him to the idea of opening a traditional café with a rugby theme.

Nick’s passion for all things rugby has helped him create a menu with options such as a Grand Slam breakfast and jacket potato fillings inspired by the Six Nations.

Options include all-day breakfasts, omelettes, sandwiches and baguettes, bacon and sausage rolls, homemade curries and lasagne, gammon and egg, salads, bangers and mash, fish and chips, options from the specials board, vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as too many others to mention – there’s something for everyone!

“We wanted to be more than just a traditional greasy spoon,” Nick told Voice.

“Everyone I know loves rugby, whether its Rugby League, Union or national and all are welcome through our doors to show their love and support of the game.

“We’ve got a fantastic chef and source all of our produce locally, with meat coming from John’s Meat Market and fruit and vegetables from the Indoor Market – not only are we supporting our local rugby team, we’re also supporting our local traders.

“Everything is made fresh from scratch and too order, so please be patient if the café is busy! We serve great food, not fast food! We’re hoping to be a ticket outlet for people too, so they can get tickets for games at Rodney Parade.”

The Scrum-tious Café is open daily from 8am until 4pm, Monday to Saturday, and you don’t have to sit in the café to enjoy its food, as Nick and his team offer a collection service .

The Scrum-tious Café additionally offers an outside catering service, with hot and cold buffets for any occasion. Call for more details.
