Ottimo is a wide format digital printing company based in Newport, and recently celebrated its 10th anniversary in business. Its team of professionals prints and installs hoardings, building wraps, signage, modular exhibition stands and displays, vehicle graphics and more, working with some of the UK’s most well-known household brands with print work being seen all over Europe.

In 2009 Lee Crew and Nick Lindwall spotted an opportunity to provide a better standard large format digital printing service in South Wales and the UK. Starting out in a print room less than 20 square metres in size and with just one 1600mm wide solvent printer, the business quickly grew taking on more machinery including UV flatbed, a five-metre wide UV LED printer, and most recently a 3.2m Dye-sublimation printer for soft signage. Ottimo has worked with a vast array of clients over the past 10 years and is proud to have displayed work in many iconic places and venues. Clients and markets include retail signage and graphics, sports signage and graphics, property marketing signage and graphics, corporate signage, construction signage and TV and theatre set dressing.

Voice recently caught up with Lee and Nick to ask them a few questions about achieving their first 10-year milestone.

Congratulations on celebrating your 10th anniversary, how did you celebrate your first decade in business?

Lee: Thank you. Yes, in December we threw a party at The Pod in Newport to celebrate along with many of our customers and suppliers that have helped and supported us along the way.

How has Ottimo changed over the past ten years?

Nick: Ottimo has developed immeasurably over that last 10 years. We started as just the two of us from a very small space within one of our customer’s premises, operating one small 1.6m wide printer. There are now 15 of us occupying 7,500sq ft, operating a wide range of high production printers up to five metres wide.

With all the things you have learnt since 2009, what advice would you give to yourself to the ‘you’ who is just starting out?

Lee: Concentrate on what you do best and do it right.

What local signage have you done that people would recognise in Newport and throughout south east Wales?

Nick: A lot of what we do is discreet trade work for other sign companies that do not have the facilities that we do and so we cannot name them all. Some of the direct work that we have done that readers may have seen would be hoarding and signage for Loftus Garden Village, Corporation Road. We do a lot of work for “We The Curious” in Bristol as well as Pobl & Magor Brewery. We also do a reasonable amount of print and signage for TV and film. Most recently for the Sex Education series and War of the Worlds.

Apart from the numerous local businesses you have helped, what big national brands have you worked with?

Nick: Again, indirectly we print for a lot of large national companies. Probably the most recognisable direct client would be the RAC for whom we have been producing print, signage, POS and exhibition displays for many years.

We hear you can print onto almost any surface, what’s the strangest thing you’ve been asked to print on?

Lee: We once printed on a slice of bread for a bit of self-promotion.

And what was the biggest?

Lee: We regularly print at five-metre wide x 20-30m in length. Sometimes these are welded or sewn together to create enormous banners.

What’s the most common item people come to you for?

Nick: Exhibition print. This is the core of our business and we have a lot of trade clients that are exhibition contractors that trust us with the print for the stands that they are building.

Do you offer a design service as well as print service?

Lee: Yes, we have two amazing in-house designers.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank?

Nick: We are extremely grateful to all our clients and suppliers for their continued support. Of course, all the staff too. We are very lucky to have a fantastic team.

So, for all your printing needs, why not give this professional team a call? Ottimo can easily cater for your business, whether you’re looking for window graphics, retail displays, hoarding, banners or wall art.
