If you didn’t already know, The Gate of Llanfrechfa, Voice’s Restaurant of the Year, has recently undergone a bit of a transformation, evolving from not only being a restaurant that serves award-winning food but into a wonderful deli that is home to a butcher, fishmonger and extensive pantry.

It all started during the coronavirus lockdown at the end of March, when a customer purchased a bottle of milk. Gareth Lee being the innovative entrepreneur that he is, quickly saw the opportunity in transforming his now closed restaurant due to the lockdown regulations, into an essential deli where people could purchase food.

The Gate of LLanfrechfa quickly transformed into a temporary deli-style shop utilising the largest of the restaurant rooms and is currently being used as a food hall destination shopping experience.

From the deli you will find a variety of continental meats and cheeses along with locally-sourced Welsh produce. Gareth and his team are continually seeking new artisan suppliers to expand the ever-growing product range.

Its butchery is at the heart of the business, and has a counter bursting with rich juicy meat and poultry. With a team that has a wealth of knowledge and expertise of the produce on offer, they are eager to pass on their preparation and cooking tips to their customers. Gareth or any of the resident chefs will always be on hand to offer advice.

The Gate was the first in the area to introduce dry-ageing cabinets, which improves the eating quality of the beef, deepening the flavour and enhancing the tenderness and texture.

Over the years, Gareth has built up a long-standing business relationship with local fish merchant Snowden & Co., of Cardiff, and aims to only stock sustainably-sourced fish caught in UK waters from small scale British fishing boats landed in Brixham and the West Wales coast – the bounty of fresh seafood available is something to behold!

Since lockdown started, The Gate has been selling various cook at home packs for customers to enjoy in the comfort of their own home. They range from fresh fish packs to barbecue meat packs. Its famous steak pack of two 10oz sirloins, ready to cook dauphinoise potatoes, garlic bread, pepper sauce and two desserts is available for just £20.

Due to the once bustling 120-seater restaurant being transformed into a food hall, there is now only an intimate 34-seater dining area that offers a freshly made chefs choice menu, which changes daily.

Please note, the restaurant tables can only be booked online through OpenTable and on the Facebook page using the Book Now button.
