Transport officials went on a fact-finding mission to India for the Commonwealth Games and came back with a plan for Glasgow's proposed Subway extension.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport chief executive Ron Culley and chairman Alistair Watson visited New Delhi to see the city's Urban Metro system in operation and check out how preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games were developing.

They discovered Indian firms were likely to provide better value for the east-west regeneration line linking the Subway with the new Indoor Arena and Celtic Park.

Mr Culley said: "The companies we met provided us with real food for thought in terms of their flexibility in manufacturing and working to tight deadlines."
