A NEWPORT County fan was taken to hospital following the Exiles’ penalty shoot-out win over Mansfield in the League Two play-off semi-final.

The fan was treated by staff at the ground after the full-time whistle before being taken to King’s Mill Hospital in Mansfield.

The club issued a message of support for the fan on their Twitter feed.

And speaking on BBC Radio Wales on Monday, Newport County chairman Gavin Foxall said: “We’ve been in touch with the family and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery.”

County fan Jim Drewett witnessed staff at the ground treating the man at Field Mill.

He said: “The game had finished and we were all celebrating. As we were leaving, we saw the police and ambulance staff were working on him.

“He was right in front of us between the seats and the pitch.

“Going from the joy of celebrating to seeing that, it really puts things in perspective.”

A Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a 32-year-old male was admitted to King’s Mill Hospital following the game on Sunday."
