Almost a fifth of Wales' new Covid cases recorded in Gwent

Public Health Wales has reported 2,476 new cases across Wales, 460 of which were in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board region.

The majority of the new cases were in Caerphilly (190) – as only Swansea (310) and Rhondda Cynon Taf (244) recorded more across the whole of Wales.

A total of 88 new cases were recorded in Newport, 77 in Torfaen, 56 in Monmouthshire and 49 in Blaenau Gwent.

Monmouthshire continues to have the lowest seven day rolling case rate in Wales, up to September 18 – the latest available figures.

The case rate in Monmouthshire stands at 267.5 per 100,000 people – well below the next best areas Pembrokeshire (345.7) and Wrexham (368.5).

Newport (513.3) and Torfaen (514) also have case rates below the Wales-wide figure of 559.9 per 100,000 people.

Caerphilly (718.5) has the highest case rate in Gwent, and fourth highest in Wales, while Blaenau Gwent (635.5) has the seventh highest case rate in Wales.

Six new deaths have been recorded in Wales. None of these were in the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board area, meaning the death toll for the region remains at 1,001.
