CHILDREN and young people in part of Caerphilly will be given a revamped play area as well as a new games area.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has begun upgrade works on the existing Bryn Park play area in Bedwas and Trethomas.

They are also installing a new multi-use games area (MUGA). This is being funded by the council’s Welsh Housing Quality Standard (WHQS) programme and £20,000 from Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council.

Michelle Bridges, a local resident, said: “We are extremely pleased to see that the Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen area are now going to benefit not only from a new park and outdoor gym, but also a new state of the art MUGA.

“All this would not have been possible without the support and the funding that has been made available to the area from the Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council.

“I’m sure I speak on behalf of the local community and would like to pass on our thanks.”

Cllr Chris Morgan, chairman of the community council, said: “I am proud that our council is able to support this project for the benefit of our residents, I am looking forward to seeing a lot more done in other wards.”

Cllr Lisa Phipps, cabinet member for housing and local ward member, said: “We are now nearing completion of our WHQS programme, which has seen the largest ever single investment into our housing stock. Throughout the programme we’ve worked with communities to identify their priorities for environmental improvements in their area.

“By working in partnership with Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen Community Council, we’ve been able to enhance the improvements in this area and provide outdoor facilities for a range of ages.”

The programme has seen more than £260 million invested into tenants’ homes and local communities. This includes environmental improvements including play areas, skate parks, landscaping and additional car parking.
