A £7.5 million development of affordable apartments for older people in Pill is on course to be completed next spring.

Melin Homes have announced the development on Marion Street – which will see 47 new apartments built – has now entered its final phase.

The Tredegar Court development will offer affordable sheltered housing to people aged 55 and over, with 41 one-bedroom flats and six two-bedroom flats.

The site will also include a staff room, communal lounge, and dementia-friendly communal gardens.

The existing flats also at Tredegar Court will remain and will share a communal courtyard once building is complete.

Plans for the site were green-lit by Newport City Council in November 2019.

To mark the development landmark, representatives from Melin Homes, Vistry Partnerships and Newport City Council took a tour around Tredegar Court.

Paula Kennedy, Melin Homes chief executive, said: “This is a very important scheme for us as it is our biggest development yet and it represents a significant investment in the city.

“I would like to commend our residents who have remained living at Tredegar Court while construction is ongoing, thank you for your patience, it is appreciated.  

“Building has progressed well despite the pandemic and challenges with supply chains and thanks to our close working relationship with Vistry Partnerships and Newport City Council we are another step closer to providing these much-needed affordable homes.

“We will continue to work with our residents and partners at the Council to create an inclusive community with a support network for older people which will help to combat isolation and loneliness.”

Cllr Jane Mudd, leader of Newport City Council, said: “I was pleased to be able to visit the site today to see the progress being made by our partners.

“The provision of good quality, accessible and affordable housing is one of our key goals towards developing sustainable communities, and to that end I’m pleased that we were able to provide support for the scheme through our social housing grant fund.

“We are very supportive of the plans to make the scheme more inclusive for residents, and I can’t wait to return next year to see the site again once it’s complete.”
