NEWPORT County AFC's League Two trip to Swindon and the Dragons' friendly derby against the Scarlets have been called off after the death of the Queen.

The Exiles were set to make the short trip to the County Ground tomorrow afternoon but the EFL programme has been postponed along with the Premier League.

"Further to discussions on Friday morning it has been determined that all EFL fixtures from 9-10 September will be postponed as a mark of respect by the national sport to the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II," read a statement.

"This is aligned with the approach that the Premier League and the FA will take with their competitions this weekend.

"Further information, in respect of how football, Clubs and their supporters will commemorate Her Majesty’s reign will be confirmed at an appropriate point.

"Details regarding rearranged games will be announced in due course."

County are scheduled to travel to Stevenage on Tuesday before hosting Barrow next Saturday.

Dean Ryan’s men had meant to be heading to Llanelli for their final tune-up for the United Rugby Championship on Friday evening (kick-off 7pm).

However, the fixture has been scratched as a mark of respect, following the cancellations of a number of friendlies including Cardiff versus Zebre and Glasgow against Ulster.

The Dragons had already made the decision to wrap a number of their leading players in cotton wool ahead of the URC opener at Edinburgh next Saturday but Wales internationals Taine Basham, Ben Carter, Ross Moriarty and Elliot Dee were meant to get game time.

Ticket holders will get a full refund from the Scarlets.

However, the governing body announced on Friday afternoon that all games were off after suspending rugby over the weekend.

“The WRU is also fully supportive of decisions already taken by professional sides in Wales to cancel scheduled friendly fixtures,” read a statement.

“Mini, junior and U18 matches already in place this weekend do have permission to go ahead to avoid disruption to children and families, but clubs are requested to observe a period of two minutes’ silence before all matches.

“Further decisions about when to return to play will be taken next week in accordance with royal protocol.”

The Premiership fixture between Swansea and Aberavon on Thursday evening did go ahead just hours after it was announced that the Queen had died.
