A NEWPORT councillor will put forward a proposal to introduce a campaign and a zero-tolerance Charter against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) following a shocking report from the Home Office.

Cllr Gail Giles, for Caerleon ward, will propose the motion of notice at Tuesday’s full council meeting in the hope of raising public awareness on the issue.

The news comes after a Home Affairs Committee report earlier this month revealed 170,000 women and girls across the UK are living with FGM, with a further 65,000 girls under 13 at risk.

Cllr Giles said: “From a meeting of the Newport Labour Women’s Network last year we discussed the issue of FGM and wanted to take it forward as a campaign.

“The main problem is identifying the young girls at risk.

“We’re hoping for a significant campaign for education in school and tying in all the agencies and authorities to identify those at risk.”

Newport West MP Paul Flynn, who sat on the committee, said: “We had horrific, moving evidence from people who were victims.

“We have turned a blind eye to these terrible mutilations and it must stop.

“All of us on the select committee feel action should be taken.

“It certainly is a problem in the communities here but so many people are not aware.

“It is illegal and it is a crime.”

The notice of motion will also call on the council to raise awareness in schools, work with men to understand their role in protecting women at risk and to work with health services.

A spokesperson from Welsh Women’s Aid said: “Women and girls are often too ashamed or scared to speak out, so we know that the practice is massively under-reported.

“Raising awareness is an important part of bringing this unacceptable and dangerous practice out into the open, educating people and helping to ensure help is offered to those who need it.”

Madam, do you seriously think that anyone is now not aware of the appalling behaviour of people who live in our country but disdain the civilized values of British people? It has been shouted from the rooftops.
To put it another way, the bandwagon you seek to board has been parked up and the horses are eating their well-deserved hay.

I guess it's kind of ironic that Newport Women's Forum allow men to sit on their committees in the interests of not being sexist whilst meanwhile erasing women who happen to be transgender from their website simply because they politely and reasonably ask the question of whether or not their annual bursary scheme is trans inclusive. Funny ol' world, eh?;)

The British National Party have been shouting about FGM for years and years and Muslim grooming gangs, all they got was to be called racist and Islamophobic bigots, now it's PC to try and stop this brutal mutilation of a young female.

Some will say better late than never, but shame on you, and shame on the haters of the Party that were not scared to voice the truth, unlike your parties LIB/LAB/CON/UKIP, pandering to the elephant in the room is not the way to stop this, keeping it hidden just to get their vote is very wrong, by now you all know about the Islamification of many schools in Birmingham, Luton, trying to take over schools just because they could, how many other schools have they spread their cancerous Ideology also in higher authorities of our land.

People need to wake up stop playing politics and take the Religion right on, this FGM is not of this Countries making it was brought here with the immigrant along with all the 7th Century barbaric culture, we are a modern Country going backwards to suite a vote for power by our not fit for purpose MP's, ignore it and lose your Country....this religion is on the News every day, not for love and caring but for killing, killing anyone who threatens their Ideology of world rule....

Bearing in mind that FGM has been an offence in the UK for a number of decades would it not make more sense for politicians to simply ensure that the CPS actually prosecute people who break the law? Rather than contriving cheap headlines for themselves by leaping on the current passing bandwagon.

If the CPS won't prosecute, where the law has been broken, I would suggest it is a problem that a few well placed P45's would very quickly solve.

Yes it's grievous bodily harm with intent and would attract a sentence of about 6 years on an early plea. Unlike all the dubious "historic abuse" beloved of CPS there will be full forensic evidence of the offence and the perpetrators easily identifiable. Only problem is victims reluctant to come forward; fearful , presumably, of the even more hateful things of which are capable the purveyors of the "religion" (ha!ha!) in the name of which this vileness is done

Some times I get warned for upsetting British haters, the truth is mostly kept on here, but when it seems a certain Religions followers can't answer questions about what they follow I seem to get more, when they can't answer they tend to call you a racist or an Islamophobe, to me that says it all.

What saddens me is the amount of the ones not of their following who support them, if they showed the same support against this Religion it would have packed up and gone years ago, you have to wonder if some work for the Argus who have a personal agenda.

Actually these Muslims I feel sorry for, some really want to get along with the host Country, but unfortunately the Radicals will never let them do this, some 1.6 Billion Muslims in our world, 23% are Radical/Muslim enforcers, if followers don't toe the line they can be nudged back into line by the enforcers, making friends with non believers is a big no no, it can only allowed to further their Colonisation of any Country they emigrate to, you know the friendly smile verbal pleasantries like when they first arrived, no Burkas no nasty marches demanding every thing must change for the Religion of Peace, yet now they wont change for anyone.

If they have a child of 4--12 years old going to the Mosque and being warned by the man with the full beard and the little hat that non believers of Islam are going to hell fire, family pet dogs are unclean and to be avoided, Jews are pigs and should be killed, never make a lasting friendship with non Muslims, It's ok to lie to non-believers, you can lie to other Muslims but only to keep the peace. this is in their Qu'ran, so please no holy Joe's saying it's not true.

Unless they clean all their Mosques up of these British hate preachers nothing will change, well I mean nothing will change, only until their's more of them then the British, then that's the end game for Christians and non-believers in this Country, we can see it, millions of Brits see it, Muslims see it, other Countries are having this done to them right now as we can see around the world....Yet if only our Government could....It's going to be up-to the British civilian's again to save our bacon....
