I never knew Bernie personally yet I HAVE 'known' him since 1976, since he appeared as the traveller in the BBC adaptation of Charles Dickens' THE SIGNALMAN - a subtle, assured performance for which he will always be remembered by myself and fans of the 'Ghost Story for Christmas' franchise. Rest In Peace Bernard. And THANK YOU...

Bernie was a dear "chum" and part of our Theatre In England/English Theatre Experience Staff. I loved him dearly as a friend and artist and was so glad I got to visit him this past summer at Denville Hall. What a splendid day that was for
Alan Dessen, Joan Benedix and me. I will miss him deeply and my heart is shattered that he has left us! God speed and "....to the elements be free."

Bernie was my and my family's dear loyal pal, and his death may not be a surprise but it is a great sadness. He was always full of fun and thought and, it has to be said, Celtic sadness. Lover of music, beautiful verse speaker, I had the joy of working with him from 1968, when he played Heathcliffe in my musical version of the Beggar's Opera, until he took part in my production of The Hollow Crown at the Minerva Theatre 20 years later. We toured together, talked together, sang and played together, and he often spent Christmas with us at our home in Dorset. I last spoke to him earlier this year when he was a full of life as ever. Dear Bernie, we shall miss having you in our lives. Martin, Sue, Georgia, Lucy and Theo Best XXXXX

Bernie played Lysander in the first Shakespeare production I ever saw, at the Open Air Theatre in Regent's Park in 1962. Followed his career keenly from then on.He was a very gifted singer as well as a fine actor. In later years I got to know him as a real friend and he will be very sadly missed by many people.
