Newport-based Asset International Ltd has become one of only a handful of manufacturers across the UK to achieve one of the construction industry’s highest standards, by being recognised as an Achilles ‘BuildingConfidence’ accredited supplier.
Asset, which specialises in manufacturing large diameter HDPE pipes for the water industry, has achieved the accreditation after a period of rigorous assessment. ‘BuildingConfidence’ is widely recognised as the UK standard for supplier excellence within the industry. The accreditation has been backed by major contractors including; Balfour Beatty Construction, Costain, and Skanska. The company hopes this move will generate more business from companies who use the accreditation as a pre-qualifier for the procurement process, particularly in highways and the energy sector. The scheme is designed to provide a consistent and robust accreditation process for supply chains that takes into account areas including health and safety, sustainability and corporate responsibility.
Managing director at Asset, Simon Thomas, said: “With recent figures suggesting manufacturing has slowed in the UK, Wales seems to be holding its own, it’s willingness to seek industry-recognised accreditations and invest in equipment and skills that is keeping us ahead.
“This accreditation has been championed by large infrastructure companies, but as a manufacturer and material supplier, we saw an opportunity to stay ahead of the competition and go the extra mile.
“Manufacturing has been recognised by the Welsh Government as a key sector when it comes to driving the economy forward. Asset had a record year in 2011, with a turnover of more than £13.5m, as well as the opportunity to recruit 20 more staff due to the increased market share.
“Our recent success has come from the water industry investment programme and the resurgence in the new build housing market, but we have identified several opportunities for the Weholite product across new sectors such as energy and highways, and will be placing a firm focus on growing these areas during 2012. We are confident this award will allow us to expand our market share, reinforcing our reputation in existing sectors as well as in new areas where this accreditation is a requirement.”
