Looking for Australian great-grandfather

I AM trying to find information about my great-grandfather, William James Roberts, born in Australia in 1880.

He was a marine fireman in the Australian Merchant Navy and married Margaret Jane Fitzgerald (b.

1885 Newport Union Workhouse) in 1912, while staying at the Temple Street mission in Newport.

He died in 1947 in Newport. I would be grateful for any information, especially about his Australian/naval roots.

The marriage certificate states his birthplace as Sydney and father’s occupation as gold miner.
