If the Easter holidays were getting a little on the long side and all that hyperactive energy brought on by eating too much chocolate was getting too much for yourself and the children, an ideal solution would have been to get along to the Out Of The Box Family Workshop on Monday afternoon.

Staged as an interactive taster for Run Ragged Productions Out Of the Box (staged at Newport Riverfront on Tuesday afternoon). Co-ordinators Jem and Roz took participants through a variety of activities. These included 1940s lindy hop moves and cardboard box choreography.

One thing I discovered when participating in this project is that as adults we become far more formulated with our attitudes towards cardboard boxes whereas to children a box has many possibilities especially when imagination takes flight.

Mixing rhythm with building Jem and Roz encouraged everyone to get involved by designing games and building box sculptures, this in turn taught creative thinking, co-ordination and more importantly created lots of fun.

There was also a valuable lesson to be learned for participating adults, its easy to be a bystander during such events but this workshop encourages adults to take part as much as children. So your Argus reviewer found himself joining in with over exaggerated dance moves rolling on the floor and regaining my sense of rhythm.

Forget computer games and over exaggerated activities as this workshop proved – sometimes it pays to think out of the box.
