With a reputation as one of the finest hotels in Pembrokeshire, the Wolfscastle Country Hotel is certainly worthy of the hype, as Iwan Davies discovered on a recent visit.

Blending a winning combination of old and new, the Wolfscastle Country Hotel is a high quality and friendly hotel with an award-winning restaurant to its very fine name.

A former vicarage and coaching inn, it stands next to a Norman castle from which the hotel and the village take their names.

Situated in the heart of the beautiful county of Pembrokeshire, the hotel offers an ideal base from which to discover its many delights.

It’s inbetween Haverfordwest and Fishguard and so within easy driving distance of so many attractions from the great beaches of Tenby and Saundersfoot to the south, Newport to the north and the beautiful and atmospheric Preseli Mountains.

Foodies will also love its award-winning restaurant, the Allt yr Afon which prides itself on producing fine cuisine and, with 220 miles of coastline nearby, freshly caught fish and seafood usually feature on the menu.

The restaurant has consistently been awarded an AA rosette for the past 13 years and is hugely popular with guests and locals alike.

Highly recommended is the seared scallops with Trehale Farm black pudding, pan fried quails eggs and wholegrain mustard Hollandaise to start.

Also superb is the 8oz Welsh fillet steak with maris piper chips, portobello, mushrooms, glazed shallots, with a selection of vegetables and the exquiste béarnaise sauce for the main course.

The food is also very reasonably priced with two courses costing £17.95 and three courses £21.95, although supplements do apply for some dishes.

The hotel has 20 recently-upgraded, stylish and comfortable bedrooms across two floors.

With additional seating and extra large deluxe bathrooms with a separate bath tub and shower, all rooms also have satellite television and free Wi-Fi.

The staff are wonderful, friendly and attentive and I thoroughly enjoyed my two-night stay last month.
