AS DARKNESS falls on Monday June 4, Newport will host a night of live music in the run up to a beacon lighting as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

Maindee Festival Association - with help from local Rotary Clubs - is staging the free event at the Ridgeway, Newport.

Music performances begin at at 7.30 with Cascapella, followed by Carl Butcher on guitar, cheeky girl band ToyPOP, Welsh harpist Bethan Nia and jazz duo Sarah and H.

There will be food stalls, but visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic.

The 1st Rogerstone Scout Band will perform as the Lord Lieutenant of Gwent lights up the beacon at 10pm.

The hope is the beacon will be seen for miles around and that those present on the night will then be able to see the beacon planned for Twmbarlwmbeing lit minutes later.

The beacons form part of a chain of 4,000 being lit around Britain on June 4. The event has been helped with financial and other support from Newport City Council, Rowecord, Taylor Wimpey, Burt Bouton and Haywood, Atkins and hbj&w solicitors.
