THE grandson of renowned Newport club owner the late John Sicolo, who owned the legendary TJ’s, is keeping his legacy alive by opening a music venue in the city tonight.
Inspired by his grandfather, who was dedicated to the Newport music scene and owned TJ’s for more than 40 years until his death two years ago, Ashley Sicolo, 21, is opening The 200 Club on Stow Hill.
Mr Sicolo, who began working at TJ’s aged 15, plans to hold live music ranging from rock to soul, blues, jazz, alternative and reggae at the club, as well as comedy nights and DJs.
He said: “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but have been waiting for the right time. I’m excited and proud to be continuing the legacy left by my grandfather.
“I’m grateful for all the support from friends and family who have helped turn my vision into reality.”
The 200 Club opens at 9pm tonight and will feature resident DJ Jazzy B and special guests; on Saturday, Devastation Presents and Ten Cent Toy will perform. Local band Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band will take to the stage on Sunday night’s soul night.
