ONE of Gwent's oldest residents and a former landlady has died at the age of 104.

Alice Sutton, who featured in the Argus when she celebrated her birthday in December, was born in Tregare and one was one of seven siblings.

She took over The Ship Inn in Raglan with her husband Frank in the 1950s and ran it for a number of years on her own following his death.

She had two children, Frank and Maureen - who predeceased her - two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Mrs Sutton lived with her son in Stow Park Crescent, Newport, for a few years before moving into Tregwillym Lodge residential nursing home in 1999 where she died earlier this month.

At her birthday party there in December, manager Donna Priest described her as a lovely lady and a real character.

Her funeral takes place on Friday at Raglan Baptist Church at 12noon. Family flowers only are requested but donations in lieu can be made payable to Cancer Research UK and sent to Tovey Bros, 9/11 Cardiff Road, Newport.

Mr Sutton said as his mother was born when horse and carriages were on the roads they had decided she would be carried in a carriage with two black horses on Friday.
