PLANS to change the use of a vacant Newport shop to a takeaway that have attracted opposition from councillors will be considered by councillors on Wednesday.

Oriental Twist Ltd wants to change the use of a retail unit in Clytha Park Road to a hot food takeaway.

Cllr Matthew Evans, leader of the Tory group on Newport council and Allt-yr-yn councillor, said that the proposed change of use has the potential to harm the mix of businesses in the vicinity.

He points to the Handpost, where he says the increase in takeaways has affected the daytime economy of the area.

His ward colleague, Cllr Charles Ferris, said the area is approaching saturation point with hot food outlets, while Cllr David Fouweather said another such unit would threaten the local shopping centre’s character, as has happened in the Handpost.

But officers have recommended the plan be approved by Newport planning committee and said its impact on the area was considered acceptable.

The committee will discuss the application when it meets tomorrow.
