The eastbound carriageway of the A48 near the Transporter Bridge was closed for two hours by police, after a strap which secured insulation panelling to a lorry snapped and the shrinkwrapped boards spilled onto the road.
The lorry, belonging to R T Keedwell Logistics, had been en route to the company yard 10 minutes away to refuel, before carrying its load to the West Midlands, explained transport manager Gavin Ely.
Spiteri's Recovery attended the scene at the Usk Side Business Park, near Lee Haysum Auto Repairs, while the police directed traffic. The road was reopened at 1pm.

The SDR has now re-opened.

The overturned lorry is reported to have shed a load of insulation boards.
UPDATE: 12.46pm
The road remains closed eastbound while the lorry is recovered.
UPDATE: 11.50am
A LORRY is reported to have overturned on the SDR in Newport this morning.
The incident happened between between Alexandra Road and Usk Way. Heavy traffic is reported eastbound between the traffic lights at the docks entrance and New Dock.
The lorry has shed its load and recovery work is underway. Police are directing traffic.
