TURNING up for work at what was a public toilet may not be a regular occurrence for most, but it could be in future for some employees in Chepstow.

That’s because the Mathern Road facilities in Bulwark are being sold off with a guide price of £5,000-£10,000, and the seller says they would make ideal office space, a takeaway or a small shop.

“There have been three inquiries this morning,” said Ken Morgan, one of the partners at estate agents Newland Rennie Wilkins, on Monday.

“We sell all sorts of odd stuff and this is right up there.”

Mr Morgan suggests the guide price might attract people when the toilets are sold at public auction on February 28, because the lower end of it equates to what some business owners pay a year in rent.

He said the building has 297 sq ft of internal space, similar to a small shop, and it is divided internally into ladies’ and gents’.

“You could knock the wall through and use it as an office as there’s parking at the front,” suggested Mr Morgan.

The building, which adjoins the athletic and bowls club, is being sold off by Monmouthshire Council.

Newland Rennie Wilkins says it lends itself to alternative use, as long as planning permission is granted.

But a Monmouthshire Council spokesman said: “The council is not actively considering alternative uses. The property will be sold without any restrictions in order to achieve the highest possible capital receipt for the council.

Any alternative uses will be subject to the planning process.”

Mr Morgan said Newland Rennie Wilkins offered three of Monmouthshire’s public toilets for sale last year.

Two were withdrawn, but facilities at Tintern overlooking the river went for a huge £56,000.

The auction is on February 28, at Dewstow Golf Club, from 7pm.
