A TEENAGER battling leukaemia will get to meet her idol, Olly Murs, for a second time thanks to the Argus.

As previously reported, 13-year-old Rebecca Jennings was diagnosed with the disease just a week after meeting her favourite pop star when he visited Tesco in Spytty, Newport, for a book signing in October.

She has tickets to see him in concert in Cardiff next month, but she will also get to meet him backstage after the Argus contacted his management company.

The St Julian’s School pupil is currently having chemotherapy treatment at Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales, and is concentrating on getting better in time for the event.

Despite undergoing the gruelling treatment, which leaves her extremely tired, the brave Year 9 pupil has been completing schoolwork when she can as she is determined not to fall behind.

Her teacher, Jo Easter-Thomas, even visited her in hospital to help her choose her GCSE options and she is looking forward to returning home soon to celebrate the Christmas the family never had. Back home in Newport her friends and teachers have been busy raising £1,854.72 for children’s cancer charity, Latch, which is supporting the former Eveswell Primary School pupil’s parents, Gary and Samantha, who have moved into the hospital to be with her.

The youngsters held a non-schooluniform day and sold cakes and homemade bracelets.

Joanne Easter-Thomas said: “We were all thrilled with the charity day, and with the final figure raised for the LATCH charity, which does such tremendous work.

“Rebecca and her mum were in floods of tears, overwhelmed at what went on on the day.”
