Penygarn homes developer must build home for bats
A NEW home for bats would be built by a housing developer if a plan to knock down an old chapel where they roost gets the go-ahead.
Torfaen council will be considering an application for 124 new homes and the demolition of the old chapel on the former Trevethin Community School site in Penygarn, which is currently a habitat for a number of protected bat species.
The old chapel was retained when the school building was demolished in 2008, because of its importance as a bat roost.
The lesser horseshoe bat, common pipistrelle bat and brown long-eared bat have been confirmed there.
Barratt Homes proposes to demolish the chapel and construct a separate building on site for the bats.
