ANOTHER crash on the M4 at the Brynglas Tunnels, another chaotic rush hour, another blow for a fragile South Wales economy.

The Welsh and UK governments need to stop delaying a decision over a relief road around Newport and get on with the job.

It is more than a decade since talks started on how to relieve congestion on the M4 around Newport.

Yet here we are, years down the line, with even more traffic on the roads but not a sign of anyone in power actually making a decision.

In the meantime the bottleneck at the Brynglas Tunnels continues to cause major problems whenever there is any kind of accident or hold-up on the motorway.

That leads to main roads in the city coming to a standstill and many firms losing time and money as staff and deliveries are delayed.

And residents whose homes may be in the way of any road building continue to live in limbo. The Welsh Government needs to decide which of the various options for easing congestion around Newport it is backing, and its UK counterpart needs to reveal whether or not Wales will have borrowing powers to pay for the infrastructure.

Whatever option is taken, it will be many years before work is complete on any new or upgraded road.

But at least there would be light at the end of the tunnel.

Pardon the pun. The current situation is literally going nowhere fast.
