CHEPSTOW pupils reach a pivotal point in their road safety campaign today with the presentation of their petition to the Welsh Government.

Members of the Wyedean School student campaign group are to take to the steps of the Senedd with Chepstow town councillors andAMfor Monmouth Nick Ramsay.

Backed by 1,000 people who have signed the petition, the teenagers are calling on the Welsh Government to reduce the speed limit on the A48 bridge at Chepstow from 50mph to 30mph after two of their peers were hit by cars.

Every day hundreds use the route to walk to lessons, and the issue has flummoxed councillors for many years.

That’s because the road crosses the English border, so a multi-agency approach has been mentioned as the best way to take it forward.

Today’s milestone comes months after the students gave a presentation to Chepstow Town Council about their campaign, which was followed up with a roadside protest.

Standing by the A48 in March, the group of 12 boys and girls waved placards and chanted, telling drivers of their aim to cut the speed limit.

On the same day the students collected 480 signatures for their petition.

Chepstow councillors David Dovey, his wife, Stephanie, Ned Heywood and Dale Rooke will join Mr Ramsay, forming a strong political presence at today’s Cardiff presentation.

Town council clerk Sandra Bushell said: “We are looking forward to hearing the result.”
