TWO Gwent Scouts received the highest honour a Scout can achieve at Windsor Castle.

Tammy Greenland, 21, and James Powell, 22, have been members at Blaenau Gwent Welsh Dragons Explorer Scout Unit for nearly 16 years.

They received the Queen’s Scout Award and had the honour of parading in front of the Duchess of Cambridge at Windsor Castle on Sunday.

The award recognises personal achievement, endeavour and service to others and is the ultimate goal of Scouts in the UK.

Chief Scout and international adventurer Bear Grylls also attended the event.

Miss Greenland, of Tredegar, and Mr Powell, of Ebbw Vale, are Explorer Scout leaders looking after young people aged 14 to 18.

To receive the award the Scouts had to take part in various skills challenges over 18 months.

Scout area commissioner Christopher Lee said: “They have done a fantastic job doing what they have achieved.”

Family and friends turned out to see 400 Scouts parade past the Duchess of Cambridge.

Alison Davis, 41, of Tredegar, who is district explorer Scout commissioner, has been a leader for nine years.

She said: “The Queen’s Scout Award is the highest award that a Scout can achieve.”

To achieve the award, Scouts must be under 25 and must complete a physical challenge, skills challenge and volunteering.

They are also required to hike and camp, walking 60 miles in just four days, and also have to work on a residential camp and run a set of activities for young people.
