A NEW £3.5 million train station at Pye Corner, Newport, moved a step closer after £1 million of funding was announced for the project.

The Welsh Government successfully applied for £2.5m from the UK-wide new station fund towards the cost of detailed design, planning and delivery of the new station.

Minister for transport Edwina Hart announced yesterday that the Welsh Government will make up the rest.

The new station at Pye Corner will feature a single platform, CCTV, ticket purchasing facilities, a car park for 70 cars and customer information screens and should be open in 2014.

It will feature on the Ebbw Valley Line to Cardiff which transports 300,000 people annually, linking Ebbw Vale and other towns in Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly, plus Rogerstone in Newport, to Cardiff.

The news comes a week after details of a new £11.5 million station for Ebbw Vale town were announced.
