TRIBUTES have been paid to a senior Monmouthshire council officer.

Monmouthshire Council yesterday confirmed that Steve Greenslade, director of transition, died last week.

Council leader Peter Fox has paid tribute to him, saying he was an intelligent, warm and well-regarded officer.

He said the officer had played a massive role in the development of the council since its inception 17 years ago.

Mr Greenslade led the officer team dealing with the Abergavenny cattle market project.

He also spearheaded the Usk County Hall project and the demolition of the former county hall in Cwmbran.

It is understood that Mr Greenslade had been ill for some time.

Cllr Fox said: “It was with great sadness that we learnt of Steve’s passing. Steve has played a massive role in the development of Monmouthshire County Council since its inception 17 years ago and his contribution has been invaluable.

“He was a hugely respected individual who positively influenced the lives of citizens in Monmouthshire. Steve was also highly respected across Wales for the work he carried out at national level.

“As an individual he was a very intelligent, warm and wellregarded person with a subtle sense of humour. He will be greatly missed by all who worked with him and by his local government colleagues in Wales.”

Deputy leader Cllr Bob Greenland said it had been his “privilege to work closely with Steve in recent years”.

He said: “I have valued his professional judgement and wise counsel on many occasions.

“We shall miss the wit and bonhomie that shone through even the most difficult meetings.

“He has contributed so much to Monmouthshire that his legacy will live on for years to come.”
