FIFTEEN years after first years after first starting to build a model of his home village of Magor, David Burton has finally got to see his work in all its glory – thanks to staff at Hasbro UK.

Mr Burton, 72, worked tirelessly to build the 30ft by 15ft model using plywood, stone and superglue until a heart attack five years ago meant he had to stop the project while it was only two thirds complete.

The model remained at Mr Burton’s home but, due to limited space, he had never seen the model laid out altogether.

But following a visit to Mr Burton, Nick Shaw, 55, who works in the warehouse at Hasbro UK saw the project and asked if he could finish it off.

But he then went a step further and arranged for the model to be laid out in Hasbro’s warehouse at Reevesland Industrial Estate, Newport, for Mr Burton to see.

Mr Burton said: “It was amazing. It all went together as planned. It took a lot of patience to build it but I had never had enough space to see it all together.”

Mr Burton, former landlord of the Somerset Arms, Abergavenny, started the creation to keep himself busy in his retirement.

After moving to Magor at the age of 14 and being brought up there, Mr Burton based his model on Magor in the 1950s after he says he has seen a lot alter over the years.

Mr Shaw said: “I went to his house and he brought down the model and it was just amazing. The detail is tremendous.”

Mr Burton is now providing templates to help Mr Shaw finish the project off. Mr Shaw is currently converting a chapel into a house in Ebbw Vale and plans to display the village in a room in the house once it is complete. In the meantime, it is being stored at the warehouse.
